For some reason, Universal Classics (parent company of Philips, Decca et. al.), in preparing their bargain box set Ultimate Rachmaninov, decided to include these performances, with Zoltán Kocsis at the piano, and Edo de Waart conducting the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra (concertos 1 and 2 from this recording, as well as the accompanying concertos 3 and 4).4/5(6).

It is obviously not the sentimental aspect of Rachmaninov's music that has attracted Zoltan Kocsis to record all of the piano concertos for Philips (Nos. 1 and 4— , 2/84; No. 2—not yet released).

In the s, with Jean Fournet and Edo de Waart, the orchestra gained international recognition. Valery Gergiev’s appointment heralded a new period of bloom, which continued from with Yannick Nézet-Séguin; principal conductor until the – season, after which he remains with the orchestra as honorary conductor.
